Highest PMG Graded North Africa $1 Sheet Offered at Auction
Fr. 2306 $1 1935A North Africa Silver Certificates Uncut Sheet
of Twelve PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.The Schwartz-Lindquist tenth edition enumerates only 16 examples of this elusive emergency wartime uncut sheet and the example in this lot is included in that figure. The Treasury Department originally issued only 25 uncut sheets of $1 North Africas. Track & Price has recorded 20 auction appearances for uncut sheets since 2006. The F-C block was used not only for $1 Hawaii uncut sheets, but also for $1 North Africa uncut sheets. The sheet in this lot has serial numbers 41952067-72 in the left column and 41954065-70 in the right column. This issue was printed at the request of the War Department for use by American troops in North Africa. Later, they would be used during the advancement in the Mediterranean Theatre. After V-E Day, the yellow seal notes were paid to soldiers who were shipped from Europe to the Pacific Theatre. Only two sheets listed in T&P have been third party graded by PMG. Of that pair, the example in this lot is not only the highest graded, but it is also the only one to have earned the coveted EPQ grade modifier. None of the PMG graded sheets have crossed the auction block since we originally auctioned our current offering in January 2013 for $17,265. A dozen years later, we would prefer to err on the side of caution with our estimate. However, this wonderful historic numismatic artifact graded by PMG is poised to climb above that figure.
