Description

King of the $10 Silvers

Fr. 1700 $10 1933 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A total of 216,000 1933 $10 Silver Certificates were printed. They differed from other small size silver certificates at the time since the note featured "Payable in Silver Coin to the Bearer on Demand," as opposed to "Ten Dollars in Silver Payable to the Bearer on Demand." Minor silver coinage was coined at a premium of 9 cents per dollar of face value over silver dollars. In 1935, government records indicated 368,000 notes were destroyed. It is assumed that total included nearly every 1933A $10 Silver Certificate (which was never released), and a large portion of the 1933 $10 Silvers. To date, Chambliss estimates 90 to 100 examples of this type note are likely to exist in total. This example is one of the nice pieces showing Gem quality embossing, colors, and paper. The margins, though ample, are a touch uneven top to bottom for a full Gem grade.
