Beautiful PCGS Graded Gem 65PPQ $500 Gold Certificate

Fr. 2407 $500 1928 Gold Certificate. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
This note was last offered back in 2006, where we sold it raw for $41,400. We described the note then as "A lovely note from the Midwest Collection of Small Size Type Notes. It's easily one of the finest examples of this rare type and denomination we've had the pleasure of offering in any of our sales, with exceptionally vivid colors and unusual eye appeal. The face centering is about as good as it comes, and while the back is a bit off, to label this note as anything less than Gem would be grossly unfair." PCGS agreed fully with our assessment, making this one of only five small size $500 Golds to receive the Gem 65PPQ grade, with none higher. PMG has graded three at this grade level, with one higher. Interestingly, with the exception of the one PMG Gem 66 note which has sold three times since 2007, with the last sale at $117,500 in 2013, and one PMG 65, which sold in 2008 for $97,750, not one of the other notes graded by either service at these levels has been available at public sale. We sold a PCGS 64PPQ $500 Gold for $58,750 in August of last year, suggesting that an estimate at the midpoint of that number and the $117,500 realized in 2013 by the lone 66 makes sense, but ultimately it is the bidders who will decide who will take this beauty home tonight, and at what number.
