Fr. 1961-D* $5 1950 Wide II Federal Reserve Note. Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
We originally sold this note with back plate number 2086 in September, 2003, and the description read in part, "A new discovery of considerable significance to collectors of small size star notes, as hitherto no star examples have been reported of the Wide II variety for any of the 12 issuing districts. Fortunately for the collecting fraternity, this specimen is a lovely fully original gem, with wonderful centering and no defects of any kind whatever." The fifth edition of Oakes has been released since then, and a Philly Wide II star has been recorded. Still, this is an important rarity, and who knows when the next opportunity will be to acquire a Wide II star.
