Description

High Grade Fr. 344 1891 $100 Silver Certificate

Fr. 344 $100 1891 Silver Certificate PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ.
This is a handsome example of this Open Back $100 Silver that possesses original paper surfaces, nice color, and white paper. The margins are solid and the paper has been able to avoid pinholes all of these years as attested to by PMG awarding its EPQ accolade to this beautiful note. It is one of a mere 31 specimens recorded for this Friedberg number, six of which are permanently impounded in government institutions leaving barely two dozen pieces for the collecting fraternity. This example is also firmly ensconced in the condition census for this number as only one note has been certified finer and that is a PMG About Uncirculated 50 that sold for $176,000 three years ago. Two other notes are reported in a comparable grade to tonight's offering - a AU that has never been publicly offered and a EF-AU that last crossed the auction block almost 25 years ago. Whether today those two pieces would meet the stringent third party criteria for their assigned grades is anyone's guess. Be that as it may, not very many of those reported notes will have the eye appeal of this fantastic piece. A truly great artifact of American financial history that will be a centerpiece of the next collection it enters.
