    D(aniel) N. Morgan Courtesy Autographed Fr. 224 $1 1896 Silver Certificates Uncut Sheet of Four Serial Numbers 5-8 PCGS Choice About New 55.
    This is the second sheet produced for the $1 1896 Educational Series. A penned notation along the bottom margin reads, "Issued July 23, 1896 Washington, DC 12:30 PM D(aniel) N. Morgan." Morgan has also courtesy autographed all four notes on the back vertically to the right of Washington's portrait on two lines. "DN Morgan," which is the top line and "July 23, 1896," which is the bottom line. PCGS has commented on the minor restorations in the selvage, which appear to be the closing of a few immaterial edge splits. D.N. Morgan's engraved signature also appears on the notes of this sheet. He served as Treasurer of the United States from June 1, 1893 to June 30, 1897.

    Uncut sheets of large size type notes are all very rare and the desirability kicks up considerably when the notes are of an important personality note type. Again, the desirablity increases with the single-digit serial numbers. And once again, increases with the dated courtesy autograph which coincides with the date of issue of the design. Consideration also must be given to the fact that for the design, only the first three uncut sheets of Fr. 224 and one random serial numbered Fr. 225 sheet are known. The Serial Number 1-4 Fr. 224 sheet was offered as part of a single lot that realized more than $1M, and contained the serial number 1-4 $2 and $5 sheets as well. The aforementioned "random serial numbered" sheet sold in our August 2020 ANA Platinum Night Auction for $33,600. That example and this sheet are one of just three for collectors to pursue, but this is historically far more significant, surpassing the importance of the other large size sheets we have sold for more than $100,000. This lot has so much history going for it, and all this adds up to a paper money treasure of the highest order.
