Waupacca, WI- Waupacca County Bank $2 June 15, 1858 G4a Krause G4a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was in operation from 1858 until 1861 when it, and a large number of other Wisconsin Free Banks, failed. Notes were redeemed at 83¢ on the dollar. The $2 design has a vignette of a farmer taking a break with his children flanked by a smaller vignette of two Native Americans pondering the advances of "Civilization" in the distance and the state comptroller die. There is a pale red-brown overall tint and a large red and white TWO protector. The note is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes the evidence of previous mounting (a stamp hinge remnant at the middle of the left and right margins) which suggests that this note was quite possibly once a part of D.C. Wismer's holdings. The POC locations match those of the plate note in the Krause state catalog but are different from the Haxby plate note. They are also different from those found on a $2 that was part of a sheet sold at a public sale in 2009. This suggests a surviving population of three or perhaps four Proof notes of this design.
