Sheboygan, WI- Bank of Sheboygan $1 18__ G2a Krause G2a Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank opened in 1856 as a free bank and remained in business for almost a decade after the Civil War, becoming the First National Bank of Sheboygan. The $1 design incorporates an overall dark red tint with two large red and white 1 protectors and has vignettes of a mechanic by his anvil and a woodsman next to a felled tree. The state comptroller die also appears. This note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. The card has a large piece torn from the end, but the note itself has amazingly escaped without any damage or impairment whatsoever. A close examination of the location of the POCs suggests that this note (as well as the other three notes offered in this auction) is from the uncut sheet that appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale as Lot 2078. The population of surviving Proofs of this design appears to be three or four examples.
