Madison, WI- Dane County Bank $5 Sep. 15, 1854 G8 Krause G8 Proof PCGS Choice New 63.
The bank opened in 1854 and remained in business until 1863 when it became the First National Bank of Madison. The $5 design features a Native American family and a teacher and student flanking a shield with a FIVE on it. The state comptroller die and an oval cameo-like medallion head along with a small eagle vignette complete the design. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. With one example of this note being in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, there appear to be two to three surviving Proof examples in private hands.
