Description

Madison, WI - Bank of the Capitol $5 18__ WI-360 G6 Proof. PCGS Choice New 63.
Proofs from this well-named title are eminently collectible since issued notes from here are exceedingly rare. This is a very nicely engraved India paper proof by Toppan, Carpenter & Co, New York & Philadelphia that originated from the Newman Collection proof sheets. Agriculture, holding a sheaf of wheat, is casually seated on an enormous ornate "V" composed of two sculptural stalks, one thick and one thin. Seated America as a Native American princess is at lower left holding a shield and capped liberty pole. There are a few $5 proofs to our knowledge, including two on the uncut sheet first sold in Charles Hamilton's 16th sale, December 1966, and bought by John J. Ford, Jr. That sheet was plated in Muscalus' Paper Money in Sheets. This is one of two $5 proofs from the former Newman sheet. The other example, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $646.50 in Newman Part VII. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. Stylish, and with just a faint wisp of foxing at the upper left of the vignette knocks the grade down slightly, but its eye-appeal is lovely. This is formerly from the Newman Internet Part 2 sale where it realized a bargain $305.50.
