Extremely Rare Mercantile Bank, Beaver Dam $1 Proof

Beaver Dam, WI - Mercantile Bank $1 18__ WI-45 G2. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.
This Beaver Dam proof series is the rarest by far from this town and was not present in the Krause Collection in either proof or issued format. We believe there are no issued notes from this bank that used red protectors. The illustrated $1 proof in both references, Haxby and Krause, is from the Wisconsin Historical Society's sheet ($1-$1-$3-$5). This masterfully styled India paper proof on cardstock was engraved and printed by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. This "B" position note shows a Native American man on a hill overlooking a scenic river view. Interestingly, the vignette was also used for the What Cheer Bank of Rhode Island. Intricate counters are in all corners. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The PCGS Very Choice New 63 $5 proof from this series, unique in private hands, was sold in Newman Part VI for $3,290. A Superb Gem proof example from this striking series.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
