Wheeling, VA- North Western Bank of Virginia $1 Feb. 10, 1862 G2b Jones BW30-06 PMG Very Fine 30.
With branches in Jeffersonville, Parkersburg, and Wellsburg, the North Western Bank was in operation from 1817 to 1865 when it became the National Bank of West Virginia at Wheeling (Charter 1424). With profile medallion heads on both ends, the center vignette provides and expanded view of the elements of the Virginia state seal. A large red 1-ONE protector completes the design. This note is scarce, with Jones estimating a surviving population of perhaps 5-9 notes at the time the Virginia catalog was published. We do not believe that number has grown substantially since.
