DescriptionStaunton, VA- William A. Burke 25¢ Aug. 21, 1861 PS60-12 Fine.
William A. Burke apparently had a number of different careers between 1860 and 1885. He is listed as a Depot Agent in the 1860 Federal Census but already had significant real estate holdings. In 1870 he is listed as being associated with a foundry while the 1880 census lists him as a merchant. It appears that he served as Postmaster in the 1880s. All of Burke's issues are very scarce. This note has all spent a fair amount of time in circulation and has the usual petty imperfections that come with the experience including pinholes, edge nicks, and minor edge roughness.
