    Scottsville, VA- Bank of Scottsville $20 April 18, 1861 G20b J-L BS15-34 PMG Very Fine 25.
The state treasurer die has been replaced by the state arms and the countersignature space has been removed from this design to facilitate its issue as an unregistered note for circulation. The practice of transitioning from registered to unregistered circulation was widespread among the state's free banks in 1860-61. This note is about as nice as these come, with PMG mentioning evidence that the note was previously mounted. This evidence is virtually invisible through the holder. This variety is quite rare, with an estimated 5-9 surviving examples. This is the first note of this design that we have offered in one of our public auctions.
