    Crushingly Rare Romney, VA Obsolete

Romney, VA- Bank of the South Branch of Potomac $10 Nov. 6, 1815 Very Good-Fine.
This very early and very rare bank was operating without the benefit of a charter or authorization until the state banned such banks and demanded that their circulation be retired before August 31, 1818. Seen with hinge remnants and rough edges, but wholesome and intact. There is an estimated surviving population of only 2-4 notes, making this a note that should be a major highlight of any Virginia or West Virginia collection. This is only the second time we have been able to offer anything from this very rare early issuer. The other was from our sale of the Aberon Collection. Even in this well circulated state of preservation, tonight's offering is vastly superior to that note.
