Richmond, VA- Bank of Virginia $20 18__ UNL as J-L BR30-69 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was originally organized in 1804 and ultimately had ten branches located around the state. If the bank survived the end of the Civil War, it was only by a matter of weeks. The bank's headquarters burned to the ground during the fall of Richmond. Its balance sheet was bloated with Confederate securities that were now worthless. The $20 design features an allegorical female presenting a scroll inscribed "free and independent States" to Liberty. This vignette is flanked by two oval cameo-like medallion head 20 counters. The left end panel contains a stylized version of the Virginia coat of arms while the right end panel has an oval cameo-like medallion head counter. The note is printed on India paper mounted on archive paper or thin cardstock with no forms of cancellation present in the signature lines. While this design is often found in issued form, the same can not be said for Proofs which are unlisted in both Haxby and Jones-Littlefield for this design. A single sheet of four examples of this design (including presumably this note) appeared in Lot 2014 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, and may account for the total surviving population of Proofs for this design.
