Richmond, VA- Bank of the Commonwealth $5 18__ as G2a as Jones-Littlefield BR15-25 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The bank was authorized in 1858 and remained in business until succumbing sometime around 1862-63 according to most sources. The note features a vignette of two men having a discussion by a large hogshead of tobacco as well as an oval portrait of Washington and the state treasurer die. Other design elements such as the bank title are printed in red-orange and there is a red-orange and white FIVE protector panel. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. This was one of four examples appearing in Lot 1999 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
