    Philippi, VA- Bank of Philippi $50 Mar. 15, 185? G8a J-L BP40-30 PMG Very Good 10 Net.
The design for this $50 was predicated on the bank operating as a free bank, which it did from 1853 to 1860-61 or so. The state treasurer die and countersignature appear at left, complementing a large vignette of Liberty and Justice seated by a large federal shield at center and a Small vignette of a child with a dove at right. The note also has two red protectors and red security panel that covers the bottom half of the note. The number of surviving examples is around 2-4 notes. This marks the first time that we have been able to offer the registered (free bank) variety of the $50. PMG notes a large horizontal split, a couple of tape repairs, and some small pieces added. The note faces up well and on a note of this rarity perhaps these minor distractions do not matter all that much anyway.
