Newly Discovered Pawpaw Tunnel B & O Note

    Pawpaw, VA- B & O. R.R $1 April 4, 1840 Jones UNL
A great new discovery, with this piece of railroad scrip unlisted in the estimable Jones & Littlefield Virginia reference, which lists absolutely nothing from Pawpaw or Pawpaw Tunnel. Pawpaw is located in Morgan County, West Virginia, a town of about 500 people at the eastern end of West Virginia. The town took its name from the nearby tunnel, which was to be shared by the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The project soon turned into a financial disaster for both parties. Begun in 1836, and was planned to take two years. The project was not completed until 1850, and saw delays resulting from engineering difficulties, a cholera epidemic, internecine warfare between rival ethnic construction gangs, and financial difficulties in raising funds to keep the project going. This piece of scrip is the only one we have ever seen or heard of from this location or this project. PMG Very Fine 30, with a tiny internal split which affects nothing.
