Nelson County (Lovingston), VA- D.A. Witt (Sheriff) at Monticello Bank at Charlottesville 50¢ May 1, 1862 Jones Littlefield PN10-07 PMG Fine 12.
This companion denomination to the previous 15¢ note was also issued by Dennit Abner Witt and was payable at the Monticello Bank. It was receivable for state and county taxes due for 1862 and was likely issued by Witt in his official capacity as Sheriff. The text specifying that the note was to be redeemed in sums of $5 or its multiple is also struck out on this note. The note has a couple of splits, as noted by PMG, but is fully intact and a rare issue. In the field of obsolete paper money, rarity almost always trumps condition. This piece will be a nice addition to any Virginia collection.
