    Description

    Confederate Savings Bank 50 Cents

Montgomery, VA - Confederate Savings Bank 50 Cents April 1, 1862 Jones & Littlefield PM75-05. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent.
We have never cataloged a note from this title, and it was not represented in the NASCA 1983 Affleck Collection sale. It is not categorized in Jones & Littlefield as a "Savings Bank," despite the signature style, but it is listed with the scrip note issuers. Locally printed by Johnson Pr., Lynchburg on brown paper. At top center is the New York State coat of arms, with the motto EXCELSIOR on the banner. The left end shows a Native American huntress. The title in Gothic is across, bisected by the central vignette, and the obligation is underneath. Noted with "Small Rust Stains at Top Center; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." Broadly margined and vibrant. A great title and rarity.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
