    Rare and Desirable Virginia Proof

Martinsburg, VA- Bank of Berkeley in Virginia $5 18__ Proof Crisp Uncirculated.
The bank was authorized in 1853 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the First National Bank of Martinsburg. Printed on India paper without the usual cancels along the signature lines. The note's focal point is the central vignette of three dogs chasing a deer. There are some light corner mounting remains with a small piece of paper loss seen at upper right. There are a couple of pre-printing crinkles with the longest being approximately 3.5 inches. This is only the second example we have sold. The other was a $10 Proof, graded PMG AU 55 with repairs, that sold for $840.
