Martinsburg, VA- Bank of Berkeley in Virginia $5 18__ as G2 J-L BM15-05 PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank was organized in 1853 and survived the Civil War to become the National Bank of Martinsburg in 1865. This striking note features a vignette of three hunting dogs closing in on a stag flanked by an oval female portrait and a vignette of a girl balancing a sheaf on her head. It is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock without any POCs or other forms of cancellation present. It is believed to be one of four examples that appeared as part of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale that were split between Lots 1995 and 1996.
