    Description

Lynchburg, VA- Merchants Bank of Virginia $8 18__ as G8 as Jones-Littlefield BL40-35 Proprietary Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The bank was chartered in 1851 and remained in business until closing its doors sometime before the end of the Civil War. The odd denomination note features a large vignette of Liberty draped in the Stars and Stripes and a vignette titled Farmer and Mechanics depicting three men "solving the world's problems." This is a proprietary Proof printed using the original plate by ABNCo during the 20th century. Rarity has not been established presently, but this may be the only realistic way to own this excessively rare design.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part II
