Lynchburg, VA- Merchants Bank Altered $10 Sep. 1,1854 A20a J-L BL40-43 PMG Very Good 8.
It may be a matter of semantics as to whether this note is spurious or altered. The note is printed from a plate that was used to produce notes from several banks in several states, one of which was the Merchants Bank of Mankato City, MN. Your cataloger believes that the plate was altered rather than the notes. In any case this note would not have fooled many locals and was undoubtedly put in circulation far away. The note has seen extended time in circulation but is still completely intact without any repairs or grievous condition issues. Very rare and seldom seen.
