    Lexington, VA- Bank of Rockbridge $1 (2); $5; $10 1857-62 J-L BL15-05; BL15-06; BL15-20; BL15-25 Very Good or Better.
The bank was authorized as a free bank by the General Assembly on May 21, 1852. Its pre-war notes were printed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting and featured a large custom vignette of the Natural Bridge, a local scenic attraction flanked by views of Washington College (today Washington & Lee University) and Virginia Military Institute in the distance. Red-orange end panels complete the designs. The Civil War era $1s are far more humble affairs, being locally typeset affairs whose main ornamentation is a rendition of the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The $5 (BL15-20) has a 1" fold split while the $10 (BL15-25) has tape edge reinforcements and a tape repaired 1-3/4" edge tear at left center. The red-orange end panels on both notes are a bit oxidized.
From the Aberon Collection of Virginia Obsolete Banknotes (Total: 4 notes)
