    Description

Harrisonburg, VA- Bank of Rockingham $10 18__ as G4 as Jones-Littlefield BH15-15 Face and Back Proofs PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ; PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ
Originally incorporated as the Citizens Bank of Virginia in early 1853, the bank changed its name to the Bank of Rockingham in 1854. A rarity amongst Virginia's antebellum banks, the institution survived the Civil War, becoming the First National Bank of Harrisonburg in 1865. The note design, intended for use when the bank was operating as a free bank, incorporates a vignette of two farm women working in the barnyard flanked by vignettes of a rendition of the state seal and a locomotive. The decorative red back includes the bank location and denomination. Both Proofs are printed on India paper mounted on cardstock. There was one example of each Proof in Lot 1988 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. Unique or nearly so.
