    Description

    Fredericksburg, VA- Bank of Commerce Spurious $5 (2); Altered $10 1855-59 S5; S10; A5 J-L BF30-09; BF30-12; BF30-19 Very Good-Fine.
The Bank of Commerce was organized in 1853 and, according to at least one source, survived the Civil War, winding up its affairs in 1869. Successful banks were often the targets of criminals who "worked on" worthless notes so that they appeared to be issues of the more prosperous institution. Both $5s are spurious designs, intended to fool those who knew that the Bank of Commerce was a good bank but had little idea of the note designs being used. These fanciful designs were created for the purpose of larceny. The $10 is an altered note from the Southern Bank of Georgia (Bainbridge) that was physically changed so that it appeared to be the issue of this bank. All notes are in repair-free condition with only petty evidence of circulation such as edge nicks, short tears and separations, and the like.
From the Aberon Collection of Virginia Obsolete Banknotes (Total: 3 notes)
