    Charlottesville, VA- Monticello Bank $8 July 1, 1861 G18a Jones-Littlefield BC25-21A PMG Fine 12.
This $8 was issued as the bank (along with many of the state's other free banks) was transitioning to issuing unregistered notes in 1860-61. This note, which features a great large allegorical vignette depicting Music, Poetry, and Painting, was not redesigned as the bank intended to issue new $1s and $2s. As a result, it was simply placed in circulation without the state treasurer signature. This example has seen time in circulation but appears to have survived the experience without attracting any repairs or glaring condition distractions.
