    Unlisted $10/$1 Raised Note - Charlestown Manufacturing & Exporting Co.

    Charlestown, VA- Charlestown Manufacturing & Exporting Co. Raised $10 Sep. 27, 1816 J-L BC25-UNL Good-Very Good;
    Charlestown, VA- Corporation of Charlestown Facsimile 15¢ Jan. 1, 1862 Tremmel VA-C1 Fine.
    The Charlestown Manufacturing & Exporting Co. opened in 1813 and closed in or before 1818 when the General Assembly ordered all unchartered banks to suspend operations and retire their circulation. This note is unusual in that it is a $1 raised to make it appear to be a $10 on the bank. This suggests that the bank was at one point considered to be reputable. This alteration was unknown to Jones-Littlefield. The note has a large piece out of the left end as well as a couple of paper things and more minor edge roughness.

    Also included is a S.C. Upham facsimile of a 15¢ issue of the Corporation of Charlestown that he printed in Philadelphia during the Civil War. While there is a piece missing in the lower left corner, the full Upham imprint is intact outside of the bottom frameline.
    From the Aberon Collection of Virginia Obsolete Banknotes (Total: 2 notes)
