    Description

    Charleston, VA- Farmers Bank Spurious $5; Spurious $10 Oct. 4, 1854 S8; S10 J-L BC10-05; BC10-10 About Uncirculated; Extremely Fine-About Uncirculated;
    Charleston, VA- Bank of Charleston $5 July 19, 1858 G4a J-L BC05-10 Fine-Very Fine.
    The Farmers Bank was a fraudulent incarnation whose only purpose was to provide a name for fancifully designed spurious notes. Your cataloger suspects when this bank became to widely known that the perpetrators changed out the town and state on the plate and started again with a different Farmers Bank fraud.
    The Bank of Charleston was an entirely different matter, The General Assembly authorized the Bank of Kanawha to move to Charleston and change its name to the Bank of Charleston on March 31, 1858. Most sources indicate that the bank had closed sometime during the next decade.
    All of the notes are in pleasant repair-free condition with no meaningful distractions aside from a single small POC cancel in each of the Farmers Bank notes.
    From the Aberon Collection of Virginia Obsolete Banknotes (Total: 3 notes)
