Bloomery, VA- Unknown Issuer at Bloomery Forge Store $1 1858 J-L PB50-08 PMG Very Fine 20.
Bloomery, located in Hampshire County, was named for the type of early iron furnace in use at the time. It was the location for the Bloomery Furnace, built by the Bloomery Furnace Co. in 1844. The charcoal furnace had a weekly capacity of 60 net tons and was in business into the 1880s. The company store issued scrip for use by employees, with this $1 surprisingly printed by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty. It features two end vignettes of Proserpina and a center vignette of Agriculture and Prosperity. PMG notes that the handwritten information has been added (falsely) but your cataloger can not rule out its legitimacy as it appears to be done in a hand and ink of the period. More study should clarify its status. In any case, the note is very rare with a Jones-Littlefield rarity rating of R-7, indicating a surviving population of 2-4 notes. We are aware of two notes (this example and the note illustrated in the Virginia catalog) at present.
