A Group of Four Bank Notes from the North Western Bank of Virginia 1844-61 Very Good-Fine.
The North Western Bank of Virginia was originally authorized by the General Assembly in 1817 and continued in business until the conclusion of the Civil War when almost all of the locations were succeeded by national banks.

    $2 May 1, 1861 G-UNL J-L BW30-11
This design was intended as a branch issue but was apparently used on occasion for issue in Wheeling as "Wheeling" is handwritten in as the location. Commerce is seated on a bale flanked by two oval cameo-like medallion heads, The note incorporates a large red 2 - TWO protector. The note has a small chip missing from the lower right corner and a few very minor edge dings

    Parkersburg Branch Spurious $5 July 4, 1847 UNL J-L BW30-19
Good banks attracted bad notes and that seems to be the case here. This is a dreadfully executed note with bad just about everything- vignettes, lettering, borders, and counters. This note would have been placed in circulation far from Wheeling, where note handlers might have been familiar with the bank but not with what note designs were being used.

    Wellsburg Branch Counterfeit $5 Mar. 8, 1852 C144 J-L BW30-24A
A passable counterfeit that would have tripped up the careless, this $5 still has problems. The cameo-like medallion heads intended as counterfeit deterrents did their job. These did not come off well. The human figures are also a bit off. There are telltale scrapbook page remnants on the back corners suggesting that the note was previously mounted but they are not particularly distracting.

    Counterfeit/Spurious $10 May 1, 1844 C28 J-L BW30-44
This is a creation that is either a counterfeit or possibly spurious design (Jones speculates it could be spurious while Haxby says counterfeit). While the lettering is not bad, the portrait at left and the medallion head counters are not at all convincing.
