Columbia, TX- Commercial & Agricultural Bank of Texas $5/Cinco Pesos ND (18__) G8 Medlar 21 Remainder Choice About Uncirculated.
Approximately two thirds of this Texas bank note remainder is present. The C&A was the only bank authorized to issue currency in Texas prior to the organization of national banks in 1865 by virtue of its April 30, 1835 charter granted by the Mexican Government. However, this banking privilege remained dormant (though notes and other fiscal papers were prepared) until 1848 when Samuel L. Williams opened the bank in Galveston and operated it for ten years. The backs of uncut sheets on this bank were used to print state of Louisiana Civil War issues. The $5 in this lot has parts of two $1 Cr. 3 Louisiana notes printed on its back. Just about the only way to acquire full C&A notes is to reconstruct them from the Louisiana issues. Even the $1 Medlar plate note on page 49 was reconstructed from three of the Louisiana notes (we auctioned that plate note in September, 2002.)
