Cave, TN- H.P. Smith & Co. $1 Nov. 18, 1862 Garland UNL PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
This was a family run affair, with W.G. Smith, who was serving with the 25th and 84th Tennessee Infantry Regiments, leaving the business in the hands of his brother. Sources are a bit unclear as to whether his father was also involved in the business but in late 1862, it appears that the business was focusing on being a tannery. The Schafluetzel census suggests a surviving population of 3-5 examples of this denomination. This assessment is pretty well borne out by the fact that we have handled only two examples of this denomination over the years, including this note. PCGS notes minor stains and mounting remnants on the back (although these are not readily apparent through the holder).
