Rare Bank of St. Louis $20 Red Tinted Proof-Ex Wismer

St. Louis, MO - Bank of St. Louis (2nd) $20 18__ MO-50 UNL. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent.
The $20 denomination proof from this unlisted Danforth, Wright & Co., Philad. & New-York series printed on India paper only. Like its $10 companion, obtained from D.C. Wismer prior to 1940, it has a deep red tint plate to complement the vignettes. Two seated allegorical females flank an oval portrait of Washington. The upper corners show "20" counters. At left, a buckskin-clad woodsman uses a ramrod to load his rifle. A young woman's portrait is at the right. Full rust-red tint lace is across the note, with a deeper red protector "20" at the bottom. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made. Grading also noted the "Mounting Remnants on Back," which are the Wismer-placed stamp hinges confirming the pedigree and acquisition from over 75 years ago. Very lightly handled and a gorgeous full color proof.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
