$1 Miners Bank of Savings of Alta, CA Payable in Gold Dust-One of Two Known

St. Francisco, CA- Miners Bank of Savings of Alta California $1 18__ Remainder
While fractionally denominated examples from this bank are scarce, but offered at fairly regular intervals, no one had ever seen a dollar denominated specimen (save for the some proprietary proofs of dubious origin) from this Upper California bank until a well worn and stained $1 remainder turned up in the March 2011 Stacks-Bowers Baltimore sale. That note, which had a couple of pieces missing, fetched $7,475. This piece, which walked into a coin shop in northern California late in 2012, is worlds better. Unlike the fractionally denominated pieces from this bank, the $1 notes come in a full size format, but like their fractional siblings, were printed by Gavit & Co. in Albany, NY. Other than the impaired example sold in 2011, we know of no other dollar denominated specimens from this bank, as even massive collections such as the Ford and Schingoethe holdings lacked such a note. Any estimate here is simply a guess, as the next opportunity to own a $1 example might not come for years, but if rarity and desirability are any guide, our estimate may well be conservative.
