Description

Hamburg, SC- Bank of Hamburg (2nd) $100 Sep.(?) 1, 1856 G20 Sheheen 257 PMG Very Fine 20.
While the exact date of dissolution has not yet been nailed down, the bank was organized in 1836 and appears to have nominally remained in business until at least early 1866, when newspaper notices for a bank shareholders meeting to be held on February 28, 1866 appeared. The very low daily quotations for the bank's notes after the war leave little doubt that it was ultimately liquidated, probably between 1866 and 1870. This note design is somewhat unusual, comprising a large oval portrait of Liberty flanked by large red-orange denominational counters and security devices. PMG states pinholes are present.
