Rare Hoyer & Ludwig Bank of Scottsville $50

    Scottsville, VA - Bank of Scottsville $50 Aug. 15, 1861 VA-215 G26a, Jones & Littlefield BS15-40. PCGS Very Fine 25.
This is a beautiful Hoyer & Ludwig lithographed note from the Bank of Scottsville.
The common vignettes seen on this note make it very collectible in conjunction with Confederate notes. To the right of center, Commerce is seated while Ceres, crouching, holds an urn. This vignette appears on the Confederate $10 Type 28 notes. The oval portrait of Washington at the upper left also appears on the Confederate $50 Type 8 notes. Blue color protectors include end swatches of lathe work. At the top, "50" denominations flank the right vignette and the die at the bottom center has an outlined 50/FIFTY. This is a rare type and was not in the 1983 Affleck sale. The color and margins are excellent on this early Civil War-dated note.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
