    Description

Westerly, RI- Hopkinton Bank $1 Jan. 10, 18__ as G14a as Durand 2443 Proof PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
The bank was incorporated in 1850 and located in Hopkinton. It later moved to Westerly. The bank specialized in speculative western land deals which, along with excessive circulation, were its undoing. The bank was placed in receivership in 1857 and closed in 1859. The note depicts a harvesting scene and a rather curious vignette of cotton plants and baskets of harvested bolls under the palm trees in some southern clime. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. Six examples of this design were part of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
