Providence, RI- Mechanics & Manufacturers Bank $1 Nov. 2, 1863 as G4, Durand 1588 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Notes from this title are rare and the later $1 type sports a Santa Claus vignette. The bank was incorporated in 1827 and went on to become the Fifth National Bank of Providence (Charter 1002) in 1865 after surviving the Cashier defaulting on more than $70,000. Allegorical representations of Agriculture and Commerce appear at center while Ceres holds down the right end and an unidentified maiden holds down the left end. We are aware of only one other public auction appearance of this design (albeit with an earlier vintage imprint than this note's Toppan, Carpenter & Co. imprint) in recent years. Formerly part of the Len Glazer collection of Civil War dated notes and a rarity in excellent grade.
