Providence, RI- Marine Bank $5 18__ G8 Durand 1538 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Incorporated in 1856, the bank remained in business until becoming the Third National Bank of Providence in 1865. True to the bank's name, the theme of this note is distinctly nautical with a delightfully detailed vignette of the Launching of the Adriatic flanked by a vignette of a sailor and oval portrait of steamboat pioneer Robert Fulton. The note is printed on India paper without the usual POCs or cancellations of any kind. While not appearing in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, we are aware of around four surviving proof examples of this design.
