Providence, RI- American Bank $1 18__ G4 as Durand 907 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was incorporated in 1833 and went on to become the American National Bank in 1865. The $1 design features a seated allegorical female holding a book and compass looking at a scale. The end panels contain ship vignettes and a small vignette of the Rhode Island coat of arms appears at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. There were four examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale (Lots 1818-1819). Haxby was aware of, and illustrated, the note in Proof form. This suggests a surviving Proof population of perhaps 5-6 examples.
