Newport, RI- Rhode Island Union Bank $5 18__ as G36 as Durand 706 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was organized in 1804 and remained a state institution until 1881 when it became the Union National Bank of Newport. The $5 design features a vignette of an angel and cherub unveiling the state's coat of arms. A smaller vignette of a Native American warrior is at left and a small oval vignette of two hands shaking is at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with small star punches in the signature lines. The note is a bit wrinkled. There were two examples of this design in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
