    Raleigh, NC- State of North Carolina 6-1/4¢ ?, 1817 Cr. 9
    This note was part of an issue authorized by the state legislature in 1816. The purpose of the $80,000 issue was to make a partial payment to the State Bank of North Carolina for bank stock which the state had purchased. The notes were issued between 1817 and 1819. The note itself is pretty standard Murray Draper Fairman & Co. fare for fractional notes of the time period although there is a vignette of three men in a boat in the middle of the note. As most were undoubtedly redeemed, all notes from this series are extremely rare with Shull estimating a surviving population of 2-4 examples. We have never handled this denomination, only selling a 10¢ note from the same 1816 issue three years ago. PCGS Fine 12 with the normally anticipated splits, tears, pinholes, and repairs noted. The good news is that virtually none of these are major problems, leaving a very pleasant appearing note for your collection.
