Extremely Rare Bank of Pottstown $5 Note

Pottstown, PA - Bank of Pottstown $5 Dec. 1, 1857 PA-565 G8a SENC, Hoober 322-5. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent.
An extreme rarity from a bank that is all SENC in Haxby. The bank redeemed nearly all their notes and became the National Bank of Pottstown. This issued masterwork was finely engraved at Toppan, Carpenter & Co. and has the slightly later style of full American Bank Note Company printed notes. The bottom center vignette shows father, son and plow horse hard at work on the farm. Vermillion "V" protectors are on either side. Beside the title are two portraits: at left, James Buchanan; at right, a little girl with hair in ringlets. The full vermillion title is at the top center between the portraits. The corners have "5" counters. Noted with "Minor Rust Stains" that are obscured in the title color. Margins are wide and eye appeal is superb. This is only the third example we have encountered. The Seitz-Bortner collection NASCA-Smythe Memphis sale example, lot 1603, realized $990 in 1990. Another important Pennsylvania rarity from the Newman cabinet.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
