    Description

Philadelphia, PA- The Bank of the United States (First) $5 G10 Hoober 305-130
A wonderful lot that includes not only one of six known proofs of a $5 issued by the First Bank of the United States, but also an even rarer 1794 letter from John Kean, Cashier of the Bank of the United States, to Samuel R. Gerry, Collector of Marblehead, MA. Gerry was the brother of Elbridge Gerry, fifth Vice President of the United States, and the namesake of the term "gerrymandering" (redrawing of electoral districts for political advantage). The letter, dated June 10, 1794, informs Gerry that a new $5 was being issued and that a proof on "common paper" was being sent to "...shew you the form and appearance." John Kean, who was appointed by President Washington to be Cashier of the Bank of the United States where he served until his death on May 4, 1795, also served in the Continental Congress from 1785-87.
The $5 proof grades About Uncirculated with two light vertical folds, probably as a result of being mailed in this letter. The stampless letter sheet has a little edge wear and a pull where the red wax seal was placed and is believed to be one of four such letters known. A unique and historic document set.
