Pittsburgh, PA- Mechanics Bank (of Pittsburgh) Spurious $5 Jan. 9, 1856 S5 Very Good-Fine.
This is a spurious note designed to take advantage of money handlers who were familiar with the bank but not with its note designs. These would typically be placed in circulation far from Pittsburgh. The note is printed from a fraudulent plate, originally made to produce counterfeits on a Philadelphia bank which was later modified to print this note. This note has a row of arrowhead shaped POCs in the right margin, perhaps to make sure the note did not recirculate after being detected. We have not handled this note design previously.
