High Grade Venango Bank $5 Issued Note

    Franklin, PA - Venango Bank $5 July 23, 1863 PA-145 G6a Hoober 126-3. PCGS Very Fine 20PPQ.
Notes from the bank are seen occasionally, but nearly always in low grade. This $5 issued note is beautiful, bright and vibrant, with excellent style and green color devices by the American Bank Note Company. At the left is a woman, flowers in her hair, standing in a harvesting field. Lifting her skirt, she dips her toe into a stream. At the top center, under the title, is the Pennsylvania Auditor General's Seal. At the upper right is Mercury shown as a small child. Dual green "5" protectors flank the seal, and a green lathe work strip is across the bottom center. Proofs from the bank are more frequently seen than signed and issued notes. Very scarce and the finest we have encountered.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
