Warren, OH- Western Reserve Bank $5 Aug. 6, 1860
Almost all of the Independent Bank Issue notes from this bank are listed in Haxby as SENC- Surviving Examples Not Confirmed, as is this case with this $5 design. Haxby also included mention of known counterfeits of these pieces. Wolka listed the counterfeits as R-4 and genuine notes as R-8, his scarcest rating. The male portraits are of Henry Clay and Governor Thomas Corwin. The design of this note is identical to that of the $5 Bank of Geauga notes from Painesville, OH. Very Good with internal tears, edge roughness, soiling, and other problems. This well circulated piece is believed to be a well-executed counterfeit, but we will let the winning bidder make a final determination as to the genuineness of this note.
